Steering wheel locked when I am backing up my car to do reverse parking. It happened only once. It stared working when I tried to move forward and came back to normal. I showed it to Toyota authorized service center and they said they could not find anything wrong with steering. Difficulty turning steering wheel. I became anxious because I was halfway on the main street so I used both hands to turn my vehicle onto the street and looked for the nearest side street to get out of harms way. Once I got onto a side street many if not all lights on my center console illuminated brake light, battery, abs, vcs, engine light etc. I have about miles on my vehicle. I was terrified because I had to come to a complete in the middle of the street because the car kept moving straight ahead. I was afraid of being hit, because I could get the steering wheel to turn. Out of desperation and fear, I grabbed the left side of the steering wheel with both hands and tried to pull down to make the steering wheel turn. I was using extreme force, pulling numerous times before the steering wheel finally moved the wheels to the left so I could make the left hand turn. But when I tried to turn the steering wheel to the right to straighten the wheels and continue moving straight ahead, the same thing occurred. The steering wheel required excessive force, using two hands pulling down on the same side of the steering wheel repeated times to get the car in position to move forward. By the grace of god, no traffic came down the road in either direction. I continued traveling down the straight road for two miles, until I came to a stoplight where I had to make another left turn. When the light turned green, the same thing occurred. I had to repeated apply excessive force to get the steering wheel to turn, which seemed like an eternity. This time there was traffic behind me beeping their horns to get out of the way, but since the power steering was not working, it took about minutes pull the steering wheel to turn the car. I turned on the flasher lights, drove 10mph and continued home. Afraid to drive car; injured rt rotor cup using such force to turn the steering wheel.

To make driving a little bit easier, auto manufacturers have been using power assisted steering systems for a few decades now. The original power steering systems use a hydraulic pump to move fluid into chambers in your steering system. When you turn the steering wheel with the engine running, the pump will fill one of the chambers to help you turn the wheels. Electric power steering systems have started to take over as the technology has become less expensive over the years. A warning light on the dash will let you know when a fault has been detected with the steering system. This warning light tends to be in the shape of a steering wheel, sometimes with an exclamation mark. For cars with electric power steering, the light may say EPS, for electric power steering. Either way, the warning light will be yellow or red in color. Hydraulic Power Steering Systems: A common reason for the warning light to illuminate is low power steering fluid. You should pull over if you see this light turn on and check the fluid level immediately. Top it off with the correct fluid type and the light should turn off. Keep in mind that low fluid means a leak is present that needs to be remedied at the earliest. Adding fluid will only be a temporary fix until there is no more leakage. You will still be able to drive, but the steering wheel will be very difficult to turn, so you will need to be extra careful when driving. In fact, simply restarting the engine can sometimes turn the light off. Like your computer at home, small errors can occur that cause the computer to think there is an actual issue. A quick reset and the computer will see that everything is working as intended. Like hydraulic systems, the power assist will be disabled for the time being and steering will be difficult when this warning light goes on. Without power steering, the vehicle will be very hard to maneuver. Otherwise, the lack of steering assist could land you in a collision. Replacing your power steering fluid at regular intervals will help keep your steering system in top shape. Hello, my Corolla has been driving normally until yesterday. When I used the override option, I was able to back up for a little bit before the steering became even tighter. The rest of the electric seems to be working correctly; the radio was working, all the brake lights were working. This sounds like those times when my computer goes completely haywire. I turn it off, let it sit a few minutes, reboot, andit usually works ok. If so, you need to have a Toyota dealer remedy the problem, as it is their responsibility to diagnose and fix the problem. If the car is under warranty and you suggest a remedy to the dealer, you will be responsible for the cost of that fix if that remedy does not work. If the car is not under warranty at this point, then perhaps someone else can hazard a guess, but…in the absence of any information regarding the presence of a Check Engine Light and the stored trouble codes related to that light, I believe that any speculation is…premature. Is the Check Engine Light lit up? If so, you need to have those trouble codes read, and then you can report them here, in this same thread, for further, more specific, advice. No, the check engine light is not on. This could be anything from a loose gas cap to the failure of various electronic modules. If it is still under warranty, you will not pay for diagnosis and repair—if you allow the dealer to do the diagnosis. If it is not still under warranty, then you need to take it to the best independent NOT a chain operation mechanic in your area for diagnosis and repair. Does the engine start? You stated that you moved the car but did not say if you were able to drive it. Unfortunately, I was in an accident where the passenger headlight had to be replaced. I understand the warranty is nullified the second you are in an accident. Yes, the engine starts. You need to have someone connect a scanner with CAN communication capabilities to figure out what caused your dash to light up like a Christmas tree. A warranty restriction should olny apply to the area that was damaged. Was your warranty canceled by Toyota? If the car starts and drives and the only problem is with the steering I think you have a problem with the electric power steering system. From this discussion, I assume it is best to take it into the dealer and ask them to make a diagnosis…? I called my original mechanic who fixed my vehicle. He said that the portion of the car that he fixed included connections to the ABS system, so that worries me. He recommends NOT taking it to the dealership since they will likely try to upsell, etc. But at this point, it seems like there is no other choice. Are there any questions I should be asking the assigned mechanic at the dealership? And the potential cost, of course!

Reelin68 answered 4 years ago. Your alternator is either not charging, you have a loose belt, corroded terminals, or your battery is going bad. You can bring it to an Autozone and they can test your alternator to see what it's putting out for volts. Then have them put the volt meter on your battery and see how many volts it reads with the engine off. Have them check the belts also. FordNut answered 4 years ago. Reelin68 I can guarantee you he knows what he is talking about,The batteries they are putting in new Corollas and Camrys, and even Avalons these days are not high-quality. Electronic power steering in my Toyota Corolla becomes noticeably loose and will drift to one side while driving. The steering control is so loose that one must constantly be adjusting the steering wheel to prevent the vehicle from drifting. I had my alignment adjusted 3 times over the past 3 weeks thinking something may be wrong with it, but the technicians stated that alignment was within spec. I purchased new tires and balanced tires and the drifting still occurs. Found this technical service bulletin TSB and it is exactly the same drift like crosswind pushing the vehicle. I called a Toyota dealership and spoke to a service technician who stated that the authorized solutions was to replace the ecu with a different ecu part number, calibrate steering wheel centering and again align the wheels for the new ecu. If they give replace it with a different part number why isn't this a safety recall, since they are not replacing it with the same defective part number? If the vehicle steering goes out even slightly while the vehicle is in motion, why is that not considered a safety recall? This would only be covered by Toyota warranty if the issue was reported within 36 months or miles, even though a settlement was reached with Toyota in July that closed the issue with the NHTSA. A growing number of complaints over steering problems with Toyota Corolla vehicles has sparked a federal investigation, and may result in yet another Toyota recall. The troubled auto-maker has already recalled millions of vehicles in recent months over defective gas pedals, floor mats and problems with brakes. Last Wednesday, U. Department of Transportation officials said that they are planning to open an investigation into the Toyota Corolla steering problems. The Corolla uses electric-assisted steering, which is a cheaper version of power steering that uses an electric motor to reduce the amount of torque the driver needs to exert on the steering wheel to turn the vehicle. According to federal investigators, Corolla owners have been complaining that they have had times where it suddenly became very difficult to steer the car, as though the system temporarily stopped working. Toyota officials say that if there is a problem, it is most likely related to the braking system or tires. The company has said that they will recall the vehicle if necessary, but have not yet issued a Toyota Corolla recall. The Corolla is the second-most popular Toyota model in the United States, with sales ofvehicles here last year. Only the Toyota Camry sold more. Federal investigators say their investigation could potentially affectToyota Corollas currently on the road. The spectre of a Toyota Corolla recall comes just before officials from the Japanese automaker are scheduled to appear at a congressional hearing on February The hearing will focus on Toyota acceleration problems linked to problems with gas pedals and floor mats causing vehicles to speed up out of control. The sudden acceleration has resulted in accidents throughout the United States, and at least 34 deaths have been linked to the issue. In Septembera Lexus and Toyota floor mat recall was issued for 3. In January, Toyota issued another recall for 2. The Toyota accelerator pedal recalls have resulted in more than 60 Toyota lawsuitsincluding over a dozen wrongful death and personal injury claims. According to the lawsuit, witnesses said it appeared the vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control. I own a Acura Legend which exhibits a similar flaw. If I were to work steering wheel inputs from left to right repeatedly, my power steering can not keep up, effectively eliminating power assist. I suspect this flaw exists in LOTS of cars. I have a Corolla. One day as I was driving on the freeway the steering became very tough. I got off the freeway looking for a gas station thinking I needed to fill the tires with air. By the time I got to a station it was almost impossible to steer into it. I checked the tires but they were fine. Scratching my head I tried to turn the car back on. One month later the same thing happens. Now, everytime I come to a stop, it feels like the car is going to stall. It does a short, temporary rough idle before settling to a smooth idle. Sometimes when start driving it out of my driveway or from work there is a ticking sound on the roof of the car. Not a ticking sound like a clock, but one that sounds like small rocks hitting a thin sheet of aluminum.

My battery light came on while my steering wheel locked up. It turns but you have to have a strong arm to turn it. It just suddenly came on with no warning. Typically the battery light comes on when the alternator is not providing electrical power to meet demands of the vehicle. That you lost power steering assist along with the battery light coming on, leads me to think the one common thing between them - the serpentine belt drive system - is at fault. The belt is driven by the engine via the crankshaft pulley. It drives the air conditioning compressor, alternator, water pump, and power steering pumps. If the belt broke or came off due either to age, or if possibly the belt tensioner. If the belt came off or broke, the alter will not provide power and the battery warning light will come on. Also, you will lose power steering assist, air conditioning, as well as the water pump will not circulate coolant and cause the engine to overheat. Have a certified technician inspect the vehicle and correct the cause. Driving the vehicle until this is corrected is not recommended.
